Timber Frame Barn in Salem, Ohio

What a cold winters Monday morning in Eastern Ohio.  With 40-50 mph winds, single digit tempertures and clouds looming, the skilled and dedicated crew of Atlantic Timberframes sets out to build yet another beautiful timberframe barn.

One of our favorite style frames to erect, this 32’ x 48’ timberframe bank barn, is going together like a dream.  This 4 bent, 4 post profile is being assembled one atop another, getting it ready for tomorrows crane lifts.  The use of come-a-longs ensures a flawless fit.

The mortise and tenon joinery on our frames are hand chiseled and connected with solid locust pins, that we make at our shop.  It was a good morning for a good fit on the pins.  The oak timbers have to be frozen, we sure were.

The picture below shows the first bent profile being craned into place onto the deck.  The bent will be temporarily secured until the next bent is set and the horizontal beams are connected.

With the sun out and the winds down the ATF crew had two bents set within two hours of the start of the second day.  With all the horizontal connectors and purlin system in place the third bent is ready and it looks like the frame will be completed today.
Below is the fourth and final bent being set in place.  Once the horizontals are in place, we’ll be adding the timber joist system in this bay for the second level loft area.
The ground crew looks on as they prepare the final horizontals and joist system for the crane to set.
With the last piece of the puzzle in place, its time to reflect on yet another successful ATF project.  Although the structure lays like a barn in the landscape, it will be finished with structural insulated panels, and have all the creature comforts like kitchen, bath and loft.  This beautiful timberframe will be used as a studio/guest house.

What a crew!  In true Western PA fashion this 32x48 timberframe was assembled and set in two 8 hour days. WOW!!  It must have been the cold weather or the eagerness to get back to the warmth of the shop to start the next project in Seven Springs, PA.
