The
timber frame is a type of post and beam construction, which fits together solid
wood timbers (we use oak) using joinery perfected by craftsmen through the ages.
A unique bracing system combined with mortise and tenon joints is secured with
locust pegs. The joinery not only meets the requirements of modern engineering,
it has withstood the test of time and the severest weather. Atlantic
Timberframes hand-selects boxed oak timbers from mills in Pennsylvania and
Ohio. The ends of the beams are sealed from the effects of drying. After several
months of drying, the selected timbers are run through a timber straightener originally
built for the Bessemer Railroad in 1892, a classic reminder of Western Pennsylvania's
machinist heritage. Unlike a four-sided planer that follows the contour of the
timber, it operates on the principal of a joiner, straightening the timber. To
the best of our knowledge, we're the only timber framing company that straightens
timbers. |
