What is timber framing?

Timber framing is a method of construction which has existed for centuries. Joinery and dimensioned timbers and knee braces are pegged together to create "bents" which are assembled to form a self supporting skeleton of a structure. The function of the walls is to enclose the structure, not to bear loads.

How is the frame put together?

The beams are joined together with a "mortise" (the hole) and "tenon" (the tongue) held in place by wooden pegs (made out of locust). Timber framers also use knee braces (either straight or curved) to ensure strength and stability. Timber frames are famous for their strength, which make them the strongest form of construction using wood.

What is different about Atlantic Timberframes?

Atlantic Timberframes has been in business for over twenty years. We custom design and build every timber frame that we do. Our architecture is rooted in the long standing tradition of timber frame construction, utilizing traditional methods proven over time. We use only hand selected oak timbers, ensuring optimum strength and better dimensional lumber. Our weight bearing timber frames ensure unmatched strength, versatility, and the natural beauty of exposed beams.

What design options are available?

Design possibilities are virtually limitless with a Atlantic Timberframes home. Exterior siding, flooring styles, window shapes, room sizes, etc. can be easily adapted to accommodate your lifestyle. Because we use traditional methods of timber framing, a wide variety of joinery and bent options are available.

How do you enclose the frame?

Frames can be enclosed in two ways. The first method uses standard stick framing built around the outside of the frame. The other option is to use structural insulated panels for the exterior walls and roof, which offer superb insulation value. Roofing, exterior and interior wall finishes are the same as any other home in either method. Atlantic Timberframes utilizes custom designed structural insulated panels from Pacemaker Plastics and can provide panels for any of our designs.

Who would design my Atlantic Timberframe home?

We work directly with you to design your home. Ron Gabany, owner of Atlantic Timberframes, designs each project personally. His knowledge and experience ensure that the design of your timber frame is of the best quality and incorporates your personal tastes. After your timber frame design is finshed, the plans are passed on to and architect and/or contractor of your choice to complete your home plans.

Who handles the actual raising of the timber frame and application of the structural insulated panels?

The assembly and raising of a true timber frame requires the same degree of expertise that goes into the production of the various timbers. To ensure that our highest standards of quality are maintained, we always look after the assembly and raising of the timber frame. We're also well equipped to take care of the quick and efficient installation of the structural insulated panels. We always include all raising and panel application costs in our quoted price.

Do I need to hire a general contractor to oversee my building project?

It is possible to be your own general contractor or to hire a professional. It is not a decision that has to be made at the outset of your project. If you are interested in being your own general contractor we can help by making you aware of what is required. Being your own general contactor is an investment of time but it will reduce the overall cost of your building project.

What is the difference between timber framing and a conventional stick frame construction ?

The timber frame is a self-supporting structure, which means that you do not need interior walls as support walls. In fact, all of your exterior walls could be made out of glass! The strong beams enable the structure to have large open spaces, providing a pleasant feeling of airiness. Very often you will see cathedral ceilings which are two stories high. Timber framing provides versatility of design for the interior spaces and durability over time: many timber frames – especially in Europe and Japan - have been around for hundreds of years.

What's the difference between timber framing and post and beam construction?

To the untrained eye, a timber frame and post and beam home look similar since both methods leave the timbers exposed. However, from an engineering standpoint they are quite different. In timber framing, the weight is transferred through the vertical members of the bents. In post and beam construction the weight is borne by the horizontal members which rest on the vertical posts. Knee braces are used in both construction methods to strengthen the structure and help transfer the weight to the foundation. The timbers in post and beam homes are often secured with metal fasteners and spikes. True timber frames, such as Atlantic Timberframes builds, are created with traditional handcrafted wood joinery only, and secured with hardwood pegs.
